The value of multi-trauma rehabilitation on patient health-related quality of life.

Abstract

Multi-trauma (multi-body injuries and/or fractures) leads to reduced function and quality of life (QoL) for affected individuals. Rehabilitation can be a key component of care, but there is limited research on its treatment effect in this patient group. Value-Based HealthCare (VBHC) is a health model, focused on achieving patient-centred outcomes relative to its cost. This VBHC study evaluated the impact of multiple trauma on patients’ function and QoL, with inpatient rehabilitation, and the association between these outcomes and rehabilitation costs. Prolonged periods of inpatient rehabilitation translated into better functional outcomes for patients. However, longer term care is needed to improve QoL. Feedback identified health areas that could enhance rehabilitation programs and inform VBHC, including psychological medical input.
